Louisville, KY (June 27, 2022) — ChooseWell Communities (CWC), a local non-profit that supports young families committed to new sobriety, announced a new partnership with The Healing Place, a nationally-recognized recovery program for men and women, this morning.

Under this new partnership, The Healing Place will provide support and collaboration on clinical services such as counseling, case management, and peer support. This will allow ChooseWell Communities to expand its core services, such as housing and educational programming, to parents in recovery who have children 5 and under.

“In the eight years since ChooseWell Communities was founded, 95 families have found suitable, permanent housing and participated in recovery-focused coaching and support. This partnership with The Healing Place will allow us to open our doors and increase our capacity to serve even more parents who have completed addiction recovery programs and are working to find long-term success as they raise their young children,” said ChooseWell Communities Co-Founder, Kim Mascaro.

Kentucky leads the nation in child abuse, child maltreatment, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). All of CWC’s parent participants have experienced six or more ACEs — childhood experiences of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction that significantly increase the risk of poor health and social outcomes in adulthood. To break that cycle of trauma, ChooseWell Communities parents learn strategies and participate in experiences that result in reunification with their children in safe, healthy, and drug-free homes and dramatically improve odds of long-term sobriety.

“Addiction is devastating not only the addicted individual, but families as well,” says Heather Gibson, Vice President of Program Services at The Healing Place. “So often the focus is on getting help for the person battling addiction that we forget about the impact to everyone else involved, especially children. It is our hope that this partnership with ChooseWell Communities will not just bring families back together but address the trauma and cyclical nature of addiction. This partnership addresses whole families which will, in turn, positively impact whole communities. The Healing Place and ChooseWell Communities are committed to long-term solutions with long-term results.”

Leigh Ann Yost, ChooseWell Communities’ Executive Director, said, “I’m grateful and excited that we are partnering with one of the strongest leaders of substance abuse and mental health care in our region. Support from The Healing Place will give ChooseWell Communities the ability to provide current and new families alike with expanded opportunities to build recovery capitol and maintain long-term sobriety. By building a more sustainable ChooseWell Communities, we have increased capacity to address the ever-growing needs of recovery assistance, ACEs reduction, and family bonding in Louisville and the surrounding counties.”

ChooseWell Communities will continue to serve families who have received residential treatment services at Volunteers of America, Seven Counties Services, and The Healing Place.
